Understanding the Legal Power of Hebrews 9

Posted on October 31, 2019 5:39 pm

This is my understanding of Hebrews Chapter 9 which explains the legality and shows the more powerful understanding of God’s covenants, the Law, the temple and Christ’s success. Let’s read: 1-10

KJV – Heb 9:1  Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. Heb 9:2  For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. Heb 9:3  And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Heb 9:4  Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; Heb 9:5  And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. Heb 9:6  Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. Heb 9:7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: Heb 9:8  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Heb 9:9  Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Heb 9:10  Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

NASB – Heb 9:1  Now even the first covenant had regulations of divine worship and the earthly sanctuary. Heb 9:2  For there was a tabernacle prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the sacred bread; this is called the holy place. Heb 9:3  Behind the second veil there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, Heb 9:4  having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant; Heb 9:5  and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. Heb 9:6  Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle performing the divine worship, Heb 9:7  but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. Heb 9:8  The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, Heb 9:9  which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, Heb 9:10  since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.

The first 7 verses give an overview of the processes necessary to keep the temple and the people clean to be in God’s presents. In fact the whole Law’s purpose was to keep the people ceremonially clean. That’s why someone who touched a dead body or a woman on her period where not permitted to enter the temple until a certain amount of time had past. Pork or other unclean animals were not eaten or permitted in the temple.

But legal understanding really starts in verse 8-10. Using the NASB, “Heb 9:8 The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing”. **This means that the complete salvation or the absolute without question way to get into Heaven and into God’s presence, had not yet been fully disclosed to any believer, ever until Pentecost. That the temple must be destroyed or “while the outer tabernacle is still standing”.

“Heb 9:9  which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience” **Which was still standing at the time of Paul’s writing this Scripture. Paul also notes that the worshiper including Paul was still not yet perfect in conscience.

“Heb 9:10  since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.” ** Since all believers were still just ceremonially clean. This was even in Paul’s time. Paul was just ceremonially clean but holding onto a promise by God, “Yahwey” and Jesus, “Yeshua” until all things were complete, meaning the temple destruction and of course more is covered in a later verse in this chapter and in this blog.

Moving to KJV Heb 9:11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

NASB Heb 9:11  But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; Heb 9:12  and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Verses 11-12 are telling us that Christ’s resurrection made Him a high priest and that He didn’t enter through the Jewish temple made with human hands but through a Godly heavenly way.  Not through specific animal blood but through His own. Not through the Holy of Holies in the earthly temple but through God’s throne in Heaven itself and that He attained eternal redemption for god’s people.  But He’s not done yet.

KJV – Heb 9:13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: Heb 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

NASB – Heb 9:13  For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, Heb 9:14  how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Heb 13-14 explain how specific animal blood can sanctify the flesh but as in verse 9 can’t cleanse the conscience but Christ’s blood can do both. This shows the believer that he can’t have a clear or clean conscience if it involves any works including the Law.

The reader really needs to understand the following concepts of a contract in God’s mind and Law, ( which is a will, trust, testament, covenant or a type of death benefit involving inheritance is explained below). We are going to let Scripture explain this concept and then embellish it with our own uses of it in law.

KJV – Heb 9:15  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.Heb 9:16  For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Heb 9:17  For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Heb 9:18  Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

NASB – Heb 9:15  For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. Heb 9:16  For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. Heb 9:17  For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. Heb 9:18  Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.

Heb 9:15 states that since the Law could NOT give us a clear and clean conscience and an eternal inheritance, Christ became the mediator or the “go between” of the new covenant that was prophesied through the prophets like Jeremiah 31:31-33. Paul also mentions that Christ’s death has taken place. But why? Why did Christ have to die? He died to make the covenant legal and enforceable. If Satan would have known this, he would have never killed Christ.

Heb 9:16-17 states that “for where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it” and a testator is the one who makes the will, testament or covenant. This verse clearly means that for the first covenant to be legal and in force, God had to die! So this is like a will. If I have a will and make my sons beneficiaries, as long as I am alive, the will in not in force. My sons can’t go to court and claim to the judge that he needs to give us our inheritance now. The court would rule that that is not possible as long as the father is alive. This is an important point legally, as the first covenant was not truly legally in court as God had not died. It was only in play because believers were believing that God would keep His word and make it enforceable. If Christ, being God in human form, had not died, and in that fulfilling the covenant or testament; the first and second covenant could never be made legal and in forcible and all would have died in their sins.

Heb 9:18 states that “Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.” But is was not the testator’s or God’s blood. It was a temporary promise using specific animals as a stop gap or temporary fix and not able to stand the legal trials of Law.

KJV – Heb 9:19  For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Heb 9:20  Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Heb 9:21  Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. Heb 9:22  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

NASB – Heb 9:19  For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, Heb 9:20  saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.” Heb 9:21  And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. Heb 9:22  And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Heb 9:19-22 states that “almost all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness”. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is one that’s not. It also says that “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT”. What blood? The blood of specific animals but not the blood of God or the testator’s.

KJV – Heb 9:23  It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Heb 9:24  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Heb 9:25  Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; Heb 9:26  For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself

NASB – Heb 9:23  Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Heb 9:24  For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; Heb 9:25  nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own. Heb 9:26  Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Heb 9:23 states that the temple was a copy of the one in heaven and it was necessary for it to be ceremonially clean with specific animal blood. But heavenly things be cleansed with better things, being Christ’s or God’s blood.

Heb 9:24 states that Christ didn’t enter heaven through the use of the Jewish temple; he went to heaven directly using God’s power and appears before the presence of God.

Heb 9:25-26 states that Christ doesn’t have to be sacrificed often like the copied had to sacrifice annually animal blood. Christ’s blood or death fulfilled the covenant or testament making it valid and legal. It also states the Christ having appeared was at the consummation of the ages and put away sin by His sacrifice.

KJV – Heb 9:27  And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Heb 9:28  So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

NASB – Heb 9:27  And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, Heb 9:28  so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

Heb 9:27 states that it has been appointed by God that all humans must die once and after this comes judgement. So everyone is judged.

KJV – Heb 9:28  So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

NASB – Heb 9:28  so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

Heb 9:28 states that “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many”; “will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. ”

This is very interesting as it states that salvation comes when He returns a second time. “And the church went wild”. I would hate to guess how many interpretations there are for this verse and I will not give my opinion. My purpose was to go over the legal aspect of the covenant.

Gill thinks Christ’s second return was when He appeared to Stephan and Paul in visions and He will appear again. But the point is Salvation comes on that visit, not before. And verse 8 states that “the Holy Spirit signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, Well, that happened in 70 AD at the destruction of the Jewish temple so that just knocked Gill out of the park and I like Gill. I highly value his thoughts as a believer. Very interesting to think about as it means if the preterist are right then everyone who died after 70 AD is in heaven or if the futurist are right then everyone is still in their graves and no one but Christ is in heaven until His return and their rapture.

I welcome any “helpful” thoughts on this. but you have to send them to flatearthbible -at- gmail.com. Bear in mind that I have limited time so it may be awhile before I can respond if at all.

God Bless us all

Remember, what the apostle Paul said, "but test (or prove) everything; hold fast what is good!" (1 Thes 5:21 ESV)
Christians should not be afraid of investigating for the truth.
Remember as well, Eph6:12 For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age. These forces are running and ruining our world. They are in control of governments, industries and most people. You have to deal with this fact. Why hide the flat earth. Because Satan wants evolution and needs this spinning ball thing flying through space. He can't have people knowing there is a firmament over a motionless flat earth. That screams God made it. So he brain washes the people into believing a lie and we all bought the lie. This proves how effective Satan is at deceiving the nations. He has deceived even you and me. But God will allow us to see through Satan's lies if we will read and study His Word and observe His creation. Creation screams of the glory of God.

Please Note: I want everyone to understand that I do NOT agree with everything in some of these posts. So watch the videos, glean out the good and trash the bad parts. As believers, we are not going to agree on all things but should agree to love one another. It's the Lord's job to judge, not ours. Don't let anything disturb your faith. If something bothers you, take it to the Lord before you take any action. Sometimes it can take months before you can confidently move forward with something spiritual, even the flat earth. Remember: Col_3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
